Manawa 51 Merc

News / Sunday, September 10th, 2023

No one brought any radios to the Lake Manawa gathering on Saturday 09.09 but Joel KOOQL (One Quart Low) brought his father’s 1951 Mercury ‘woody’ station wagon and let us look around. The chrome in front, headlight rings and such, appear either like new or re-chromed. Wood looks really good, but has it had an additional coat of varnish in the last 70 years? Joel opened the hood so we could see the Ford Flathead V8 with the Oil Filter mounted prominently on top, the size of a quart can of oil, not quite large enough to shove in a roll of toilet paper if you didn’t have the right filter.

Anyone remember scrubbing whitewall tires with an SOS pad? Joel put these tires on 2 decades ago and they’re still good, including the exposed spare (without the metal cover to protect the rubber from the sun).
